Lisbon Portugal The San Francisco of Western Europe

Lisbon Portugal is often compared to San Francisco for its hills and bridge. Lisbon is not only the capital some people say it is the very soul of Portugal. Among the most cosmopolitan and elegantly charming cities in the world, it is a fairly small place with a metropolitan population of only about 1/2 million people. In some districts, a distinctly "small town" atmospere pervades, particularly in the winding little streets of its old quarter, the Alfama. Visitors will notice sharp architectural contrasts between the city's modern luxury high-rise hotels and elegant old buildings like the Ritz. The airport is always busy and gourmet food shops overflow with rich goods from all continents. Yet all of this hustle and bustle is quietly nestled amongst centuries-old buildings, many of which have been proudly restored. The city is also rich in history and cultural arts are displayed everywhere. The centerpiece of it all is the 752 foot figure of Christ the Redemer which stands facing the city with outstretched arms on the southern bank of the Tagus River.
The Portuguese have a realistic, but bright outlook on life. The cemetary here is called 'the Pleasures' and the word obrigado (thank you) is the native word most often spoken.
