When to Renew Your Expiring Passport

Many countries now require your passport to be valid for six months. For some, such as China or Ecuador, that six months is from the beginning of your trip; for others, such as Russia, it is six months beyond your exit date. Interestingly, Finland, as part of the Schengen Area, which comprises 26 countries in Europe, requires that your passport be valid for only three months beyond the end of your visit.
It is the passenger’s responsibility to check expiration dates there is no requirement to inform passengers of problems with international paperwork prior to a domestic flight. Still, it’s better to find out before leaving the country. Even if an airline allows you to board an international flight, if your documents are not valid, border control agents will deny entry when you arrive and force you to fly home.
Check with your destination country’s own consulate or tourist information office to get the most up-to-date requirements. My advice: choose the most restrictive requirements and adhere to those. A last piece of advice: as a general rule, rather than trying to navigate one more requirement, renew your passport early so that you have at least six months of validity before your trip, no matter what your destination is. Also take note that some countries want you to have at least two blank pages in your passport, which is another reason to have a fresh book if you’ve traveled the globe a few times since your last renewal. Airlines and border control often err on the side of caution. If you do the same, you should be allowed to board any flight, no matter how restrictive the rules are in your destination country.
